November 2023 HHARP Residency: Adam Mansbach and Defcee

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI) welcomes writer Adam Mansbach and musician Adam “Defcee” Levin to campus on Thursday, November 2nd through Sunday, November 5th for a series of engagements, conversations, workshops and performances on and off campus. 

 

Together, Mansbach and Defcee will be the featured artists for the OMAI’s Just Bust! Open Mic Series on Friday, November 3rd (free registration below) and Just Bust!’s Artistic Workshop on Saturday, November 4th. In addition to their public appearances, they will be doing a number of engagements on campus with students. They will be in a moderated conversation at the UW Graduate School of Business, Bolz Center for Arts Entrepreneurship, as well as hosting an interdisciplinary creative workshop with students of the First Wave Program and the Studio Learning Community, as well as guest lecturing in the Department of Classic and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Post residency of Mansbach and Defcee, you will be able to watch an in-depth interview highlighting all of their experiences here on UW–Madison’s campus. Adam Mansbach is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Go the Fuck to Sleep, as well as the novels Rage is Back, The End of the Jews (winner of the California Book Award), and Angry Black White Boy, and the memoir-in-verse I Had a Brother Once. With Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel, he co-authored For This We Left Egypt? and the bestselling A Field Guide to the Jewish People, and his books for young readers include the New York Times bestseller Just Try One Bite and the award-winning Jake the Fake series, co-written with Craig Robinson. The screenwriter of the acclaimed Netflix Original film BarryMansbach is the recipient of a Sundance Screenwriting Lab fellowship and a two-time winner of both the Reed Award and the American Association of Political Consultants’ Gold Pollie Award, for his 2012 Obama/Biden campaign video “Wake the Fuck Up,” and his 2020 Biden/Harris campaign ad “Same Old,” both starring Samuel L. Jackson. Mansbach is also the founder of the 1990s hip hop journal Elementary, the former New Voices Professor of Fiction at Rutgers University, and a former drum tech for the legendary drummer Elvin Jones. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times Book Review, Esquire, The Believer, The Guardian, and on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, The Moth Storytelling Hour, and This American Life. His new novel is The Golem of Brooklyn. 

About the Artist

Defcee is a rapper, writer, and educator, originally from River Forest, IL. Since he self-released his debut album at the age of 17 in 2007, he has performed across the United States, as well as internationally. His music has received coverage from FADER, SPIN, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Complex, Chicago magazine, and The Chicago Reader

OMAI’s Just Bust! Open Mic Series

Join us for Madison’s longest running all-ages open mic, Just Bust! every First Friday, 8PM-10PM at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Interested in performing during the open mic portion of the event? Guarantee a spot with a “Tap-In” Ticket through our Eventbrite, or sign up (in person) starting at 8:00pm and throughout the night until all slots are filled.

Just Bust! Artistic Workshop

JUSTBUST! Workshop is free, open to the public artistic workshop that happened every First Saturday of the month. Interested in securing your seat for this event? Guarantee a spot with a “Free Workshop Admission” Ticket through our Eventbrite, or come (in person) 15 minutes earlier to see if any seats are left. Tickets are first come, first served.

As part of the HHARP residency, Mansbach and Defcee will be making several appearances on campus to interact with students. Below are a list of campus events, which are by invitation only.

Bolz Center for Masters in Arts Administration Class Interview- Mansbach and Defcee will be guest speakers in Grainger Hall as part of a moderated discussion and presentation from a Bolz Center Arts Business candidate. 

Connecting with Classic and Ancient Near Eastern Studies Students- As jewish artists, connecting to current Classic and Ancient Near Eastern Studies students will be an opportunity to relate culture, religion, and artistic expression. They will have the chance to ask about their current work and learn more about their path as a artist as it applies to their current studies.
