Application Information

Program. The deadline to apply to First Wave for Fall 2013 was November
15, 2012. If you are interested in applying for 2014 admissions, please review

The First Wave Hip Hop and Urban Arts Learning Community (hyperlink to http:/
/omai.wisc.edu/?page_id=5) is a cutting-edge multicultural artistic program for
incoming students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bringing together young
artists and leaders from across the U.S., First Wave offers students the opportunity
to live, study, and create together in a close-knit, dynamic campus community.
Administered by the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives, First Wave is the first
university program in the country focused on spoken word, hip-hop culture, and
urban arts. The inaugural First Wave cohort of 15 students began their UW-Madison
career in the fall 2007 semester.

The UW-Madison First Wave Scholarship recipients will receive a four-year, full-
tuition scholarship to the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Once enrolled,
First Wave students can major in whatever they choose. Recipients will retain the
scholarship as long as they abide by the provisions of their artist’s contract each
year, to include academic success.

Students must first be guaranteed admission to UW-Madison before being
considered for the First Wave Scholarship. The scholarship is open to high school
seniors applying for fall admission to UW-Madison, and to external (non UW-
Madison) transfer students entering their second year of college. Transfer students
can have earned no more than 24 college credits to be eligible for First Wave. UW-
Madison internal transfer students may potentially be accepted on a case-by-case
basis. Note: Internal transfer students from UW-Madison are expected to live in
Madison and participate in First Wave activities during summer prior to the year
accepted to First Wave.

The fall 2013 First Wave application will be eligible September 1, 2013. Please
