Getting Real: The Future of Hip Hop Studies Scholarship

Led by the Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI),  and co-sponsored by the Havens Center and the Office of the Vice Provost for Climate and Diversity and a number of university units, the UW-Madison  hosts a semester-long fall lecture series based on the scholarship and art of Hip Hop. The entire campus and broader Madison community are invited to attend nine consecutive weeks with some of the nation’s top experts in the emerging field of hip hip studies who will present their research and perspectives on a variety of themes in a myriad of academic disciplines (including Sociology, History, Women’s Studies, Communication Arts, etc.).   The series is tied to a hip hop studies faculty hire initiative spearheaded by OMAI and supported by a growing number of senior faculty and university departments and units whose objective is to recruit new, diverse faculty members to the UW-Madison in an area of growing interest and relevance to the rapidly diversifying student body. Every Monday at 7 p.m. in 1100 Grainger, the campus and community are invited to attend an open lecture/discussion on the topic of the week. Each Monday at noon, faculty and staff from departments across the campus will join the experts in examining the interplay between Hip Hop and their respective academic disciplines. The evening lectures and weekly noon campus faculty discussions are listed on the brochure below and the audio recordings and schedule of the lectures are available on the Havens Center website:  www.havenscenter.org.
